* Detroit @ Montreal 1-4 - The Canadiens finally fell behind in a game, though it didn't last long as they remained perfect to extend their best start to a season in the team's illustrious 106-year history. Jeff Petry scored a power-play goal at 6:32 of the third period, Carey Price made 21 saves and unbeaten Montreal won their sixth consecutive game. Petry scored the first goal by a Montreal defenseman this season with a drive from the left point, with center David Desharnais screening Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek. Brendan Gallagher scored the first of the Canadiens' two power-play goals to tie the game at 7:44 of the second. Montreal went 2-for-5 with the man advantage after scoring two power-play goals in its first 21 opportunities. Gallagher assisted on Tomas Plekanec's fifth goal, which increased the Canadiens' lead to 3-1 with 2:04 left in the third.
Brian Flynn scored into an empty net with less that a second remaining. Mrazek made 37 saves in his first game against Montreal, which has won seven in a row against the Red Wings. Dylan Larkin gave Detroit a short-lived lead with his second goal at 4:47 of the second period. The 19-year-old rookie extended his points streak to five games with an unassisted goal when his backhand from the right side banked into the net off Price's right pad. Detroit's 1-0 lead lasted 2:57 before Montreal tied it with a favorable bounce of the puck for an unusual goal that necessitated a video review. Gallagher ended up in the Red Wings net along with the puck and ultimately received credit for his first goal, unassisted, on a power play. Plekanec sent a return pass towards Gallagher that was cut off in front of the net by Kyle Quincey. The Detroit defenseman's attempt to clear the puck into the right corner struck Gallagher's right skate and slid past Mrazek over the goal line before the Montreal right wing crashed feet first into the goalie. The Bell Centre capacity crowd of 21,288 roared when referee Dave Jackson, who did not make a ruling on the ice, announced that a video review determined that the goal was good.

* Buffalo @ Tampa Bay 1-2 - Alex Killorn scored a power-play goal with 3:57 left in the third period to give the Lightning a 2-1 win at Amalie Arena. The sequence began when Sabres goalie Chad Johnson made a save on a one-timer from Tyler Johnson and tried to cover the loose puck. Tyler Johnson controlled the rebound and passed it to Killorn, who shot into the open side of the net.
Tampa Bay shook off a sluggish first period to snap a two-game losing streak and give goalie Ben Bishop the Lightning record with his 84th win. Buffalo scored first when Sam Reinhart, who was recently promoted to the top line by coach Dan Bylsma, scored his first NHL goal at 2:52 of the first period. Tyler Ennis gained possession of the puck behind the net off a turnover and placed a drop pass in the slot to Reinhart. Buffalo had a 16-3 shots advantage in the first period. Tampa Bay tied the game 1-1 at 13:41 of the second period on Vladislav Namestnikov's second goal of the season. He took control of a loose puck near center ice and beat Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe on the partial breakaway to send a backhand past Chad Johnson. Bishop made 31 saves and broke a tie with Nikolai Khabibulin, who won 83 games for the Lightning from 2001-04. Johnson finished with 20 saves.

* Carolina @ Washington 1-4 - Nicklas Backstrom didn't waste any time in his first game back from injury. Backstrom had a goal and two assists in his season debut for the Capitals, a 4-1 win against the Hurricanes at Verizon Center. The center missed the first three games after having hip surgery May 27. Backstrom replaced Andre Burakovsky on the second line and was split from Ovechkin, his usual linemate. Trotz said wanted to tread carefully with Backstrom, considering the serious nature of his surgery, but he surpassed all expectations while playing 15:21. Carolina was the third team on this four-game Washington homestand to have played the night before (New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks). The San Jose Sharks, who defeated the Capitals 5-0 on Tuesday, are the only team Washington has played this season that did not play the previous night. T.J. Oshie scored on the power play to make it 1-0 at 15:57 of the first period. He one-timed a Backstrom pass from the top of the right circle over Ward's glove. Oshie has four points in his past two games, and Backstrom's assist was his first point of the season. Washington outshot Carolina 17-5 in the first period. The Hurricanes were held without a shot on goal for 11:56 of the second period. Backstrom scored his first regular-season goal since Feb. 19 at 1:38 of the third period for a 2-0 lead. Alone on the half-wall, his shot deflected off the skate of Carolina defenseman John-Michael Liles.
Jeff Skinner took advantage of an odd-man break at 7:45 of the third period, scoring his first goal of the season to make it 2-1. John Carlson scored his second goal of the season on the power play to make it 3-1 at 9:43 of the third. Backstrom passed to Carlson, who scored with a slap shot from the point; the defenseman leads the Capitals with five points. Alex Ovechkin scored an unassisted goal with 3:49 left to make it 4-1. Washington went 2-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
