NHL - Results - Thu 15 & Fri 16 October

Thursday, October 15
* NY Rangers @ Montreal 0-3 - Thanks to Carey Price, the Canadiens set a franchise record by winning their fifth consecutive game from the start of a season. Price made 25 saves and the Canadiens defeated the Rangers 3-0 at Bell Centre in their 98th NHL home opener. Montreal, which opened the season by sweeping four games on the road, had never started a season with five straight wins. The Canadiens opened 4-0-0 three times previously and went on to win the Stanley Cup each time. Montreal tied its fifth game in 1955-56 and 1977-78, and lost its fifth game in 1970-71. Price, Norris Trophy finalist P.K. Subban and new captain Max Pacioretty were given the loudest ovations when the Canadiens were introduced individually prior to the game. Guy Carbonneau, captain of Montreal's most recent Stanley Cup-winning team in 1993, handed off the torch that began the pregame ceremony to Pacioretty, who credited his team's depth for their record-setting start. The shutout was the 35th of Price's career and seventh in 18 regular-season games against the Rangers.
Tomas Fleischmann opened the scoring at 8:46 of the second period with his second goal in as many games. Dale Weise gave Montreal a two-goal lead at 17:55 of the third. Center David Desharnais assisted on each goal. Tomas Plekanec scored into an empty net with 36.3 seconds remaining. Price, the reigning Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy winner, continued his mastery of the Rangers at Bell Centre, where he has shut out New York six times in his past 11 starts. The Rangers were shut out for the seventh time in their past 11 regular-season games in Montreal.
Price made two straight saves on shots by Rangers center Derek Stepan from the left side during a 1:41 two-man advantage for New York late in the second period. In all, Price made five saves during the Rangers' 5-on-3 power play after Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin flipped a rolling puck over the glass for a delay of game penalty at 16:32, 19 seconds after Montreal's Andrei Markov was called for hooking. He also made a stellar glove save at 18:42 on a shot from the right side by Rangers forward Rick Nash. Lundqvist flashed his glove to rob Alex Galchenyuk during a Montreal power play at 19:25 of the second. He also stopped Brian Flynn on a breakaway at 2:43 of the third, and Desharnais had a point-blank chance at 8:47, but Lundqvist gloved the Montreal center's shot to keep the Rangers within one.

* Buffalo @ Florida 2-3 - Jaromir Jagr scored two first-period goals and had a third-period assist to help the Panthers defeat the Sabres 3-2 at BB&T Center. Jagr's third and fourth goals of the season gave him 726 for his NHL career; he moved within five of Marcel Dionne for fourth place on the League's all-time list. It was the 124th multigoal game of Jagr's NHL career and second this season. Jagr needed 23 games to get his fourth goal last season with the New Jersey Devils; he has four goals in four games this season. Aleksander Barkov had a goal and an assist, and Luongo made 24 saves for Florida. Luongo is 7-0-0 against Buffalo over the past three seasons, with four victories by shutout. The victory was the 403th of Luongo's NHL career, moving him into a tie with Grant Fuhr for ninth place on the all-time list. The Panthers are off to their best four-game start since 2011-12, the last time they made the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They won one of their first four games each of the past three seasons. Jake McCabe and Tyler Ennis scored for the Florida is 8-0-1 in its past nine against Buffalo, including four consecutive victories here. Brian Gionta made his season debut after being sidelined by a lower-body injury. He played on the top line with rookie Jack Eichel and Evander Kane. Jagr opened the scoring at 8:52 with Florida on a 5-on-3 power play. He scored from a sharp angle after taking a saucer pass from Barkov across the crease. It was the 205th power-play goal of Jagr's NHL career; he moved into a tie for 13th place on the all-time list with Joe Sakic. Jagr had been tied with Wayne Gretzky. Jagr scored again 27 seconds after play resumed following the first intermission, which was started with 2:53 remaining in the period because of glass repair. After getting the puck near the boards, Jagr skated toward the right dot and took a wrist shot that beat Johnson over his glove. Florida lost momentum early in the second period after three penalties forced them to play shorthanded for all but 47 seconds of the first 6:27. McCabe scored in his 11th NHL game when he redirected Foligno's backhand pass from the wing at 7:10 of the second. Barkov made it 3-1 at 4:24 of the third period with another power-play goal. He scored on a rebound from the slot after Johnson stopped Jagr's slap shot.

Joffrey Lupul scored to break a 3-3 tie in the third period, and Leo Komarov scored two late goals. Boone Jenner scored in the first period to give Columbus a 1-0 lead, but Toronto scored the next three goals, all in the second period, by Jake Gardiner, James van Riemsdyk and Nazem Kadri. Columbus' Nick Foligno scored with 1:58 left in the second period and Scott Hartnell scored 59 seconds into the third to tie the game 3-3. The goal for Hartnell was his 600th NHL point. Lupul gave the Maple Leafs a 4-3 lead 4:00 into the third period. The puck came within inches of leaving the zone, but defenseman Dion Phaneuf swatted it toward the goal where Lupul was stationed for the shot that escaped goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Komarov made it 5-3 with 4:09 left by beating Bobrovsky five-hole. Komarov then scored into an empty net with a minute to play.

* Carolina @ Detroit 5-3 - Kris Versteeg and Eric Staal each had a goal and two assists to help the Hurricanes win their first game of the season, 5-3 against the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Brock McGinn scored on his first NHL shift and had an assist. Justin Faulk and Chris Terry also scored for Carolina, and Cam Ward made 17 saves. Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan and Teemu Pulkkinen scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 31 saves. McGinn scored 55 seconds into the game when he put in his rebound on a 2-on-1. His original shot came from the bottom of the left circle after a turnover in the neutral zone. McGinn was called up from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Wednesday; he was one of the last cuts before the regular season. Faulk's power-play goal made it 2-0 3:07 into the second period. He one-timed a shot into the open side of the net from the bottom of the left circle for his second goal of the season.
Staal made it 3-0 at 6:15 when he put in a rebound for his second goal. Nyquist scored Detroit's first goal with 5:58 left in the period.
