NHL - Pre-Season Results [Oct 1-4]

Thursday, October 01

Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty had an assist in his preseason debut, but the Senators scored five consecutive goals to win 5-2 at Bell Centre. Pacioretty, who injured his left knee during offseason training, assisted on a goal by Nathan Beaulieu that gave Montreal a 2-0 lead 9:52 into the first period. Andrei Markov scored 1:05 into the game. Cody Ceci scored for Ottawa with 5:00 remaining in the first, and Mark Stone scored a shorthanded goal 4:11 into the second. Mike Hoffman gave the Senators a 3-2 lead at 9:31, with Stone getting his second assist. Clarke MacArthur and Patrick Wiercioch scored in the third period for Ottawa, 2-3-2 with one preseason game remaining. Craig Anderson made 40 saves for Ottawa. He started in goal after Andrew Hammond injured his groin during the morning skate. Carey Price allowed five goals on 21 shots for Montreal, 2-2-2 with one preseason game remaining. Bobby Ryan scored for Ottawa during a 3-on-3 overtime period.

* Lukas Sedlak and Dean Kukan scored 1:25 apart early in the first period, Oliver Bjorkstrand had two goals, and the Blue Jackets held on to defeat the Sabres 6-4 in a preseason game at First Niagara Center. Sedlak opened the scoring by beating Robin Lehner 5:05 into the game, and Kukan made it 2-0 at 6:30. Markus Hannikainen's breakaway goal at 19:19 gave Columbus a 3-0 lead. William Karlsson and Bjorkstrand scored on the Blue Jackets’ first two shots of the second period to push it to 5-0. The Sabres scored four times in the third period before Bjorkstrand hit the empty net with 1:19 remaining. Jamie McGinn had two goals, and Zemgus Girgensons and Evander Kane scored for Buffalo.

* Jacob Josefson scored the tying goal with 3:31 remaining in the third period and the only goal in the shootout to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 win against the Flyers at Prudential Center in the preseason finale for each team.
Jakub Voracek gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal 4:59 into the third period. Jiri Tlusty, who signed with the Devils as a free agent in September, scored a power-play goal at 3:36 of the third to tie the game 1-1. Ryan White's shorthanded goal put the Flyers ahead 11:03 into the second period. Steve Mason made 29 saves and Claude Giroux had two assists for Philadelphia. New Jersey was without injured forwards Patrik Elias (knee) and Kyle Palmieri (lower body).


* Alex Ovechkin had the tying goal with 2:34 remaining in the third period, and T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the shootout to give the Capitals a 2-1 preseason win against the Bruins at Verizon Center. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead 4:06 into the game on a goal by Loui Eriksson and held it until Ovechkin finished a passing play from Oshie and Kuznetsov by beating backup goalie Jeremy Smith. The Capitals killed a Boston power play during the 3-on-3 overtime. Braden Holtby, who relieved Philipp Grubauer after one period and made 23 saves through overtime, denied Ryan Spooner and David Krejci in the shootout. Tuukka Rask played the first two periods and made 15 saves. The Bruins finished the preseason 4-2-1 and open the regular season against the Winnipeg Jets at TD Garden on Oct. 8.
* James van Riemsdyk scored for the Maple Leafs 1:09 into coach Mike Babcock's return to Joe Louis Arena, but Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Richards had third-period goals to give the Red Wings a 4-2 win. Former Whitley Warriors Defenseman, Babcock coached the Red Wings for 10 seasons before being hired by the Maple Leafs on May 20. His return started well with van Riemsdyk's goal, but Detroit held a 2-1 lead 4:12 later after goals by Justin Abdelkader and Drew Miller. A power-play goal by Toronto's Mark Arcobello with 32 seconds left in the second period tied it 2-2. Zetterberg scored at 3:57 of the third period before Richards' goal into an empty net at 18:35.Saturday, October 03

* Jonathan Drouin scored with 2:02 remaining to cap a third-period comeback that gave the Lightning a 3-2 victory against the Panthers at BB&T Center in the final preseason game for each team. Tyler Johnson played 7:39 before leaving the game in the second period with an injury and did not return. The Lightning did not have an update afterward. Alex Killorn also was injured; he played 12:30. Tampa Bay trailed 2-0 before Ondrej Palat scored with 5:26 remaining in the third period. Brian Boyle’s goal 1:38 later tied the score before Drouin beat Roberto Luongo for the game-winner. Ben Bishop made 32 saves for the Lightning. The Panthers, who finished the preseason 3-3-0, got first-period goals from Derek MacKenzie and Nick Bjugstad. Luongo made 27 saves.

*Kyle Turris had four assists, and Mark Stone had a goal and two assists in the Senators' 5-4 win against the Canadiens at Canadian Tire Centre. Mike Hoffman had a goal and an assist for the Senators, who finished the preseason 3-3-2. Chris Neil, Chris Wideman and Codi Ceci also scored. Clarke MacArthur was injured in the second period and held out of the rest of the game for precautionary reasons. Dale Weise, Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher and Max Pacioretty scored for Montreal. Nathan Beaulieu had three assists.
The Canadiens finished the preseason 2-3-2. They open the regular season at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 7. Ottawa opens the regular season at the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 8. Matthew O'Connor, with the Senators because Andrew Hammond (groin) is injured, made 33 saves. Dustin Tokarski allowed five goals on 15 shots for the Canadiens.


*Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings in a 2-1 win against the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. Athanasiou and Mantha scored less than six minutes apart in the second period for Detroit, who finished the preseason 6-0-2. Brad Boyes, who signed this week after attending camp on a pro tryout, scored 22 seconds into the third period for Toronto. Petr Mrazek made 28 saves for the Red Wings; Jonathan Bernier made 13 for the Maple Leafs. The teams did not score during a 3-on-3 overtime.
Sunday, October 04

Alex Ovechkin scored two goals, and John Carlson and Evgeny Kuznetsov each had a goal and three assists to lead the Capitals to a 6-2 victory against the Islanders at Verizon Center in the final game of the NHL preseason. T.J. Oshie had a goal and two assists, and Jay Beagle scored for the Capitals, who were 5-0-2 in the preseason. Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist, and Kyle Okposo scored for the Islanders. New York plays its first home game at Barclays Center on Oct. 9 against the Blackhawks. Braden Holtby made 22 saves for the win. Thomas Greiss started for the Islanders and allowed five goals on 18 shots. Stephon Williams played the third period and made seven saves.
