Toronto @ Buffalo 1-2 SO - Matt Moulson ended the shootout in the fifth round when he waited out Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier and beat him wide with a wrist shot. Johnson then turned aside Brad Boyes' attempt at a shot through the five-hole that won the game for the Sabres. Kane made it 1-1 with his first goal as a member of the Sabres with 4:29 left in the third period. Kane picked up a turnover from Kadri and took a wrist shot from the half boards that eluded Bernier to his glove side. PA Parenteau gave Toronto a 1-0 lead 1:28 into the first period. Parenteau tipped a shot from the blue line from Maple Leafs defenseman Roman Polak past Johnson for his first goal with Toronto. Parenteau also had the Maple Leafs' only goal in the shootout. Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf received two stitches after a collision with Kane in the third period. Phaneuf was cut near his lip when he was struck by Kane's stick. No penalty was called on the play.
Philadelphia @ Boston 5-4 OT - The Flyers started their comeback after Mason robbed David Pastrnak at 6:34 by getting his pads on a shot despite being out of position. Video review confirmed that the puck didn't cross the goal line. Giroux trimmed the lead to 4-3 at 7:48 with a goal from in front of the Boston net, and Wayne Simmonds tied the score 4-4 with a shot from the left dot that beat Rask inside the far post at 10:34. The Flyers started the game without forward Brayden Schenn, who was out with an upper-body injury, and they lost two more players to an upper-body injury during the game. Center Sean Couturier didn't return after a hit by Boston forward Zac Rinaldo at the end of the first period, and Neuvirth (10 saves) didn't return after the first. Neuvirth appeared to take a stick to the face on a goal by Patrice Bergeron. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare put the Flyers on the scoreboard first with a goal on his own rebound at 9:28 of the first period. Boston forward Brett Connolly answered at 13:28, converting a pass from Bergeron, who moved into sole possession of 10th place on the Bruins' all-time list with 347 assists. It was Connolly's first goal with the Bruins. Neuvirth's shutout streak ended at 145:33. The Flyers took their second lead of the period on a goal by Sam Gagner at 15:04, but Bergeron scored on the power play at 17:24 to even the score. The game was tied 2-2 at the conclusion of the first period when Rinaldo was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for charging Couturier along the boards in the Philadelphia end. The Flyers failed to put a shot on net during the ensuing power play, and the Bruins took the lead on a shorthanded goal. Center Chris Kelly scored for a 3-2 Boston lead 4:31 into the second period after a give-and-go with Loui Eriksson. Jimmy Hayes gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead at 8:49 of the second with a shot off the rush that beat Mason from the bottom of the left circle after a pass from Krejci. Boston played without forward Matt Beleskey, who has one goal and one assist in five games, because of an upper-body injury.
Detroit @ Edmonton 1-3 - Connor McDavid scored his first goal at home.
McDavid scored the eventual game winner in the second period, taking a pass from left wing Benoit Pouliot and beating goaltender Petr Mrazek with a quick move. The goal was McDavid's fourth of the season, giving the No. 1 selection in the 2015 NHL Draft six points in his first seven games. Letestu opened the scoring 12:32 into the first period on the power play, taking a pass from Nail Yakupov in front and tipping the puck past Mrazek. The goal was Letestu's first with the Oilers; he signed with Edmonton as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason. In the second period, McDavid extended Edmonton's lead to 2-0 at 6:34, converting a feed from Pouliot on a 2-on-1 rush. McDavid was able to fend off Red Wings center Brad Richards and went to the net, where he took the pass from Pouliot. McDavid was able to get around Mrazek for his first goal at Rexall Place this season. Purcell put Edmonton up 3-0 with a goal 30 seconds later. The Oilers forward took a pass from Lauri Korpikoski in front and let go a shot, which Mrazek turned away. The rebound, however, was inadvertently kicked into the net by Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey, who was dealing with Edmonton center Anton Lander in front. Tatar scored at 6:49 of the third period to cut Edmonton's lead to 3-1, when he slid a rebound past Talbot after Gustav Nyquist's shot was denied by the Oilers goaltender. Justin Abdelkader had an opportunity to cut the lead to a goal on a breakaway with 4:30 left in the period. Abdelkader, however, hit the outside of the post with his shot.
