Montreal @ Buffalo 7-2
The Canadiens became the second team in NHL history and the first in 40 years to start the season with eight consecutive regulation victories by routing the Sabres 7-2 at First Niagara Center. Andrei Markov had a goal and four assists, Brendan Gallagher and Dale Weise each scored twice for the Canadiens, the first team to start its season with eight regulation wins since the Sabres did it to begin the 1975-76 season. The Canadiens are two victories shy of the NHL record of 10 consecutive wins to start a season. The 2006-07 Sabres and 1993-94 Toronto Maple Leafs each started 10-0-0, but the Sabres had three shootout wins during their streak and Toronto's eighth victory came in overtime. Markov's first assist came on Torrey Mitchell's go-ahead goal at 13:31 of the second period. He scored his first goal of the season at 18:22, when his power-play slap shot beat Chad Johnson after Tomas Plekanec won a faceoff. Markov had the secondary assist on Gallagher's power-play goal 27 seconds into the third period and the primary assist on goals by Max Pacioretty at 11:11 and Weise at 16:23.
Markov's assist on Pacioretty's sixth goal of the season was his 500th career point. His five-point game gave him 501 points for his career. Plekanec and Subban each had three assists and backup goaltender Mike Condon made 34 saves for Montreal, which can become the first team in NHL history to start its season with nine consecutive regulation wins by beating Toronto in 60 minutes.
The Canadiens led 1-0 after one period on a goal by Weise at 14:35, and made it 2-0 when Gallagher whacked his own rebound past Johnson 45 seconds into the second. But the Sabres tied it on goals by Moulson at 4:49 and O'Reilly, whose power-play one-timer beat Condon at 11:04. Mitchell, a former Sabres forward, broke the tie 2:17 later with his third goal of the season when he tipped a slap shot by Subban past Johnson. Markov's goal made it 4-2 after two periods. Gallagher gave Montreal a three-goal lead when he put the rebound of Pacioretty's shot over Johnson's shoulder for his third of the season. Pacioretty's goal made it 6-2 and Weise tipped Markov's point shot past Johnson for his third goal of the season. The Canadiens scored three goals each in the second and third period.
Boston @ NY Islanders 5-3
Brett Connolly scored at 9:51 of the first period to give Boston a 1-0 lead. The Bruins dumped the puck into the Islanders zone, and Brad Marchand passed the puck into the slot, where Connolly's snap shot beat Halak. The Islanders, who outshot Boston 18-8 in the period, scored the next two goals. Josh Bailey scored on a power play at 14:08 to tie the game 1-1; John Tavares' shot from the right circle was stopped by Gustavsson but the rebound came right to Bailey. New York took a 2-1 lead 1:19 later on Cizikas' first goal of the season. Johnny Boychuk passed the puck to Cizikas in front. Joonas Kemppainen scored his first NHL goal at 16:13 of the second period off a turnover by Calvin de Haan. Ryan Spooner's shot was blocked by Travis Hamonic, but Kemppainen got the puck and tied the game 2-2. David Pastrnak scored at 18:16 to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead after a Tavares giveaway, one of 14 by New York. Spooner scored at 8:09 of the third period when he tried to pass the puck in front of the net, but it bounced off Marek Zidlicky's skate and went past Halak. David Krejci scored an empty-net goal at 17:35. He has a point in all seven games this season (five goals, seven assists). Thomas Hickey scored with 1:53 remaining. Halak made 21 saves.
Detroit @ Calgary 2-3 OT
Mark Giordano scored his second goal of the game 3:12 into overtime to give the struggling Flames a 3-2 win. After faking a shot, Johnny Gaudreau slid a pass to Giordano, who cut back across the crease and lifted the puck past Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard for the Flames' first home win this season. Giordano had the chance to be the hero because Hiller made back-to-back saves on Tomas Tatar and Teemu Pulkkinen about 1:30 into overtime. Joe Colborne tied the game with 1:12 remaining when he deflected Giordano's shot from the point behind Howard. Colborne was Calgary's extra skater with Hiller on the bench. Detroit led 2-1 after scoring two power-play goals in the first period.
With Deryk Engelland off for holding, Niklas Kronwall and Mike Green worked the puck at the top of the zone before Green fed Henrik Zetterberg down low. He quickly found Nyquist in the slot, where he one-timed his third of the season past Hiller at 7:38 and ended Detroit's 0-for-13 power-play streak. Giordano tied it 1-1 at 11:02. Gaudreau worked his way behind the net and sailed a pass back to the point, where Giordano snapped a shot through traffic that found the top corner over Howard's blocker. With Giordano off for delay of game, Smith's shot from the point deflected off a Flames defender and went past Hiller at 12:40. Jiri Hudler, the reigning Lady Byng Award recipient, had his first NHL fight, against Red Wings rookie Landon Ferraro with 2:33 left in the period.
Hiller kept Calgary within one goal in the third period with two blocker saves, first stopping Dylan Larkin on a point-blank shot near the midway point, then denying Tomas Tatar, who corralled a wide point shot off the end boards before trying to catch the goaltender out of position at 12:31.
Washington @ Edmonton 7-4Evgeny Kuznetsov scored three goals for the first time in his NHL career and had two assists. The win extended the Capitals' win streak to five games and gave them a sweep of their three-game Western Canada road trip. Kuznetsov, 23, opened the scoring 3:05 into the first period, finishing a three-way passing play. Ovechkin gained the blue line and sent a cross-ice pass to T.J. Oshie, who spotted Kuznetsov unattended for a tap-in past goaltender Anders Nilsson. Benoit Pouliot tied the game at 10:59, taking a pass from Nail Yakupov in front of the net and beating Grubauer. Nicklas Backstrom gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 12:07 when he took a pass from John Carlson, split the defense and snapped a shot past Nilsson for his fourth goal in as many games since returning from offseason hip surgery. Rob Klinkhammer tied the game 2-2 at 15:00, tipping a centering pass from Taylor Hall behind Grubauer. Marcus Johansson gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead at 19:39, knocking the puck into the net after Williams' attempted a wraparound. The goals continued in the second period. Connor McDavid scored his fifth of the season at 36 seconds when Pouliot's shot bounced in off his stick to tie the game 3-3. Kuznetsov put Washington ahead 4-3 at 6:17 with his second of the game on a breakaway, getting to a loose puck and slipping a shot past Nilsson. Andre Burakovsky gave the Capitals a 5-3 lead at 9:26, tapping in a cross-crease pass from Justin Williams.
Williams extended Washington's lead to 6-3 at 11:49. Nilsson was replaced by Cam Talbot after allowing six goals on 17 shots. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored at 14:42 to get the Oilers within 6-4. He got the puck back after attempting a cross-ice pass to Hall on a 2-on-1 and beat Grubauer on the short side. Kuznetsov completed his hat trick at 16:59 of the third period, snapping a shot through Talbot on the power play.
Evgeny Kuznetsov: "It feels unbelievable, it's thanks to my linemates. But the team game is more important to me. I'm just happy with how we are doing right now. It was a back-to-back games and we had to be very focused for this game."
Carolina @ Los Angeles 0-3
Tyler Toffoli extended his scoring streak to four games with two goals, goalie Jonathan Quick made 40 saves, in a fourth consecutive win for the Kings.
Toffoli has scored six of the Kings' 13 goals this season. Toffoli's first goal came on the power play midway through in the first period. He had time to settle the puck and line up a close-range slap shot that beat Cam Ward at 11:06. Christian Ehrhoff set it up with a fake-shot pass to Toffoli on the right side. Toffoli's second goal came on a 2-on-1 with Milan Lucic with 2:58 remaining in the third period. Kings coach Darryl Sutter sees Toffoli's success as an extension of "That '70s Line" from last season. In between Toffoli's goals, Anze Kopitar made it 2-0 with a backhand past an outstretched Ward at 8:04 of the third. Hurricanes defenseman Ron Hainsey inadvertently made a hand pass up the ice that went directly to Kopitar. Carolina had two solid chances in the first period, but Jordan Staal was stopped on a partial breakaway and Brock McGinn hit the post. Quick got his left pad out to stop Ryan Murphy's shot along the ice in the second period. Carolina center Andrej Nestrasil left the game early in the second when he was struck on the left knee by a shot by Ehrhoff. Before the game, the Kings placed defenseman Matt Greene on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, retroactive to Oct. 13.
