Defenseman John Moore scored a power-play goal with 3:13 remaining in overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory against the Dallas Stars at Prudential Center. The goal was the result of a solid team effort to maintain possession of the puck in the offensive end despite several opportunities by the Stars to clear with leading scorer Jamie Benn in the penalty box for hooking.
New Jersey played without left wing Mike Cammalleri because of an upper-body injury. The Devils learned prior to warm-ups that Cammalleri, who is day-to-day, would not play. Cammalleri, who leads the Devils with 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists), took a maintenance day on Friday but participated in the morning skate Saturday.
Kyle Palmieri and Bobby Farnham scored in the second period and Cory Schneider made 29 saves for the Devils, who have won three straight. Schneider has allowed two or fewer goals in 19 of his past 25 starts. The Devils are 6-1 in overtime this season. The goal was the fourth game-winner of Moore's career and second with the Devils. The 25-year-old defenseman said he is feeling as comfortable as ever under the tutelage of coach John Hynes.
Patrick Sharp and Colton Sceviour scored in the third period and Antti Niemi made 27 saves for the Stars.
Sharp pulled the Stars within 2-1 at 10:54 on a snap shot at the left post. John Klingberg maintained possession in the right-wing corner before passing to Sharp from the circle. Sceviour tied the game at 14:29 when his shot from the point beat Schneider, who was screened on the play, over his glove.
The Devils denied the Stars on three power-play opportunities, allowing three shots. Dallas began the game ranked fourth in the League on the power play; the Devils were eighth in penalty killing.
The Devils took a 2-0 lead when Palmieri and Farnham scored in a span of five minutes early in the second. Palmieri scored his 17th of the season after winning a puck battle against Jason Demers behind the Stars net before backhanding a wraparound attempt at 1:02. Farnham extended the lead at 6:02 when he took a pass from David Schlemko in the right circle and took a snap shot that beat Niemi.
Farnham has scored five goals in 19 games this season; he did not have a point in 14 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins before Devils general manager Ray Shero claimed him off waivers on Oct. 26.
The Stars were without right wing Valeri Nichushkin because of a lower-body injury. Dallas will play the second of a three-game road trip on Sunday at the New York Islanders.
Stars Quotes
Lindy Ruff: "I thought the Devils played a heck of a game. I thought they skated well, their tracking and back-checking was as good as any team we've faced. They limited our opportunities and played a smart game. I thought we had a good push in the third to get back in it. In the end, you have to find ways to get a point when you're down and we found a way."John Klingberg: "I thought we should have had a better 3-on-3 (in overtime). There's going to be pressure on me to get points as an offensive defensemen. I try to work on my defensive game so I can be trusted out there by the coaches."
