Brent Burns and Joe Thornton each had a goal and an assist to help the Sharks to a 5-4 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome. Joonas Donskoi, Logan Couture and Joel Ward scored for San Jose, which has 14 road wins this season; only the Washington Capitals have more (16). Martin Jones made 31 saves. The Sharks got goals from five different players after six different players scored in a 7-0 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Sean Monahan, Dennis Wideman, Sam Bennett and Micheal Ferland scored, and Karri Ramo made 13 saves for the Flames. Calgary has lost four of the past five games at home since winning 11 in a row, the longest streak in Flames history. All four losses have come against Pacific Division opponents. Burns broke a 3-3 tie on the power play at 5:12 of the third period. With Mikael Backlund in the penalty box, Burns one-timed a backdoor feed from Patrick Marleau past Ramo.
Ward put San Jose up 5-3 at 10:21 when his centering pass redirected off Mark Giordano and behind Ramo. Ferland cut the lead to 5-4 with a power-play goal with 3:41 remaining, after Dougie Hamilton's point shot hit Backlund and Ferland before getting behind Jones.
Jones made three saves in the final two minutes, including back-to-back saves on Ferland and Monahan, to preserve the win. Thornton scored on San Jose's third shot of the game. At Calgary's blue line, he forced Joe Colborne into a turnover before taking a quick return pass from Joe Pavelski and beating Ramo with a deke to put the Sharks up 1-0 at 5:07.
San Jose doubled the lead at 9:27. With a delayed penalty coming to Calgary, Donskoi redirected Brenden Dillon's slap pass from the point behind Ramo to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead. Monahan cut the lead to 2-1. Johnny Gaudreau hit the crossbar, and the rebound hit Ferland's skate and bounced to Monahan, who sent a quick shot by Jones at 13:45.
Couture scored his first goal of the season at 1:53 of the second period to put San Jose back up by two. Couture picked off a pass from Backlund in Calgary's zone, and spun out from behind the net and let go a shot that went off a skate and behind Ramo.
Power-play goals 15 seconds apart helped Calgary rally from a two-goal deficit.
With Mike Brown serving a double minor for high sticking and Burns in the penalty box for tripping to give the Flames a 5-on-3, Wideman sent a quick shot that beat Jones' blocker at 11:12. Still with the man-advantage, Bennett's wrist shot got past Jones at 11:27 to tie the game 3-3. The goal was Bennett's first in 18 games. The Sharks finish their two-game road trip against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
Sharks Bites
Logan Couture: "I think (we're) just showing up and playing. No pressure. Show up. Play. Keep it simple. [Jones] has played great. He bailed us out numerous times tonight. Made big-time saves. Anytime your goaltender is playing that well you have a good chance to win.""It was good for me to score and get some confidence back. It's been a long time since I've scored a goal in this League. It felt good. It's something we wanted to try to create turnovers on the forecheck. When we do that, we're successful. We got some bounces; they got some bounces. It was a weird game."
Joel Ward: "We believe in each other. Everyone has a positive belief in here. We stick together as a group. I think it's shown the last couple days of what we're capable of and we've got good depth. It's just a matter of executing every night. A 2-on-1, I saw [Couture] backdoor. I thought I had an opening, tried to slide it across. The D-man slid, went off his leg and kind of went through the goalie's legs."
